The most famous cycle paths in South Tyrol
It is one of the most famous cycle paths in South Tyrol, and is certainly the most suitable for families.
It is a path of 42 km almost completely downhill that develops on wide and protected cycle paths, in the bed of the Drava river.
My advice, for those staying in the valley, is to use the train to get to San Candido, so as to avoid traffic and take advantage of the return journey to rest.
Among other things, for those staying in hotels, camping or boarding houses, the card for public travel services of the Val Pusteria is free.
At the San Candido station there is one of the largest bike rentals in the region: Papin Sport.
Here you can rent various types of bikes, from city-bike to mountain-bike, to bicycles with assisted pedaling. There are also bicycles for children (of various sizes), seats, tow carts and so-called “camels”, or bicycles for children that attach themselves directly to their parents’ bikes. And then helmets, baskets, accessories, etc. etc.
Papin also has a bicycle pick-up service in Lienz, so once you arrive in the Austrian city you can leave your rented bikes at the stand you find in the station parking, and take the train back to San Candido.
cicle path starts from the center of San Candido, where you can also
stop at one of the grocery stores to organize a picnic on the way.
The track is almost completely downhill, only in some places it has short climbs that can be tackled by everyone, even by children.
Half way, in the Heinfels area, there is the Loacker factory, a famous wafer producer and many other delicacies, an almost obligatory stop for families with children!
There are also several open spaces, benches and tables for a break or a picnic
the last section the track becomes faster, due to the increasing slope,
but it is always accessible and approachable to everyone, both children
and inexperienced cyclists.
Once you arrive in Lienz, a photo of the ritual awaits you in front of the words “Welcome to Lienz”, and a nice tour of the squares of this beautiful Austrian town.
The cycle path from San Candido to Lienz is a “must see” for everyone!
